Background of the study

Text messaging in Nigeria is characterized by a dynamic interplay between Nigerian Pidgin and Standard English. Pragmatic variability in text messages reflects how users adapt their language based on context, audience, and communicative intent. This study appraises the pragmatic variability in Nigerian text messaging by analyzing a corpus of SMS and chat conversations. It examines how speakers alternate between Pidgin and Standard English to convey politeness, humor, and urgency. Factors such as abbreviation, emoticons, and context-specific language use play a significant role in shaping message delivery (Ibrahim, 2023). The research explores how pragmatic strategies differ between these two varieties, focusing on how code-switching and stylistic choices affect clarity and interpersonal communication. By linking linguistic theory with digital communication practices, the study aims to offer insights into effective messaging strategies in a multilingual society. The findings will contribute to our understanding of language use in informal digital contexts and support the development of improved communication tools for diverse audiences (Nwachukwu, 2024; Akinwale, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the widespread use of both Nigerian Pidgin and Standard English in text messaging, there is limited research on how pragmatic variability influences message effectiveness. The inconsistent use of language styles can lead to misinterpretation and communication breakdowns, yet systematic studies exploring these dynamics are lacking (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

• To identify pragmatic features in text messaging.

• To compare the use of Pidgin and Standard English.

• To recommend strategies for enhancing communication clarity.

Research questions:

• What pragmatic markers are prevalent in text messages?

• How do language choices vary between Pidgin and Standard English?

• What effects do these variations have on communication?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it examines the pragmatic variability in Nigerian text messaging, offering valuable insights for digital communication and language policy. The findings will aid educators, developers, and policymakers in enhancing messaging clarity (Akinwale, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses solely on text messaging in Nigeria and does not extend to other digital communication forms.

Definitions of terms:

1. Pragmatic Variability: Differences in language use based on context and intent.

2. Nigerian Pidgin: An English-based creole widely used in informal contexts.

3. Standard English: The conventional form of English used in formal settings.
